Central library collection 

The Newport local studies collection can be found in the reference library, on the first floor of Central library.

The collection holds over 40,000 items; relating to the history, geography and literature of Newport, including:

  • images
  • historic maps 
  • tithe maps 
  • Ordnance Survey maps 
  • newspapers and periodicals

We also hold several archive collections of national importance, including material on the Chartist uprising of 1839, the Mary Delaney letters and the Hanbury-Williams collection.

Family history 

Newport reference library has resources and experienced staff to help you get started on tracing your family tree. 

These resources include:

  • census returns 
  • voters lists, poll books and electoral registers
  • local directories
  • maps and newspapers 
  • Gwent family history society resources, including monumental inscriptions and parish registers
  • roll of honour - detailing casualties and those who returned wounded from the First World War
  • a large selection of family history guides

Ancestry library edition

All public access computers in Newport libraries offer online family history search tools. This also includes free access to Ancestry.com.

How to access Ancestry library edition

Library members should go to our online library catalogue.

From the library catalogue home screen, log into your account using the link on the left-hand side of the pink bar at the top. 

When you have signed in, click on the Ancestry link at the bottom right-hand side of the home page which will take you to the homepage of the Ancestry library edition.

This service is only available on Newport libraries computers.
