Climate change is one of the defining global challenges of our generation.

We are working to reduce our carbon emissions, and make Newport a cleaner, greener place to live and work.

The council passed a motion in November 2021. It declared a climate emergency and outlined the ambitions of the council to tackle climate change.

Newport City Council resolves to:

declare an ecological and climate emergency
reduce our emissions to net zero carbon by 2030
make sure the services we provide support our journey to net zero and adapt to the impacts of climate change
develop a clear climate change organisational plan, in consultation with citizens, which sets out our actions for the next five years
develop a city-wide local area energy plan, with experts from the public, private, and third party sector
work with One Newport partners and the public to develop a city-wide climate strategy
integrate best ecological practice into each area of the council’s activity
publicise this declaration to residents and businesses in Newport
