Our ambition to tackle climate change

Climate change is one of the defining global challenges of our generation.

We are working to reduce our carbon emissions, and make Newport a cleaner, greener place to live and work.

The council passed a motion in November 2021. It declared a climate emergency and outlined the ambitions of the council to tackle climate change.

Newport City Council resolves to:

  • declare an ecological and climate emergency
  • reduce our emissions to net zero carbon by 2030
  • make sure the services we provide support our journey to net zero and adapt to the impacts of climate change
  • develop a clear climate change organisational plan, in consultation with citizens, which sets out our actions for the next five years
  • develop a city-wide local area energy plan, with experts from the public, private, and third party sector
  • work with One Newport partners and the public to develop a city-wide climate strategy
  • integrate best ecological practice into each area of the council’s activity
  • publicise this declaration to residents and businesses in Newport
