The SLA is available to all Newport schools, they assist and advise them on enhancing their grounds for the benefit of wildlife and education.
They can support with:
- enhancing school grounds for nature
- teaching how to use nature as an educational resource
- assist in the delivery of forest school activities
- the use of local nature reserves, parks and green spaces
- providing outdoor learning nature based activities
The team can support schools in their forest school and outdoor classroom development this can include habitat enhancement, creation and eco schools.
Nature reserves
Schools are welcome to make use of Allt-yr-Yn and St Julians nature reserves whenever they want, by themselves. We just ask that you let us know dates so that we can make any necessary arrangements.
Schools can also arrange for classes to visit the reserves with the biodiversity in schools officer for a two-hour environmental education session. This service is free to those schools in the SLA.
The team can also help schools to explore Newport further, by making use of open spaces outside of the school, such as local woodlands, rivers, and parks.
The team can lead sessions as required at these sites in the same way as the local nature reserves (these may be subject to charge).
You can contact the biodiversity in schools officer by emailing [email protected].
